Junior Pan Pacific Championship - Day 3 and 4 Update
Wednesday, 01 September 2010 07:43
Leanne Speechley, AquaGym Swim Club Head Coach, reports from days 3 and 4 at Pan Pacific Championship Meet, Maui, Hawaii:
" Well the almighty 200Bk race has been and gone! What an exciting race Sophia had. She swam her fastest heat swim ever with a 2.13. 6 and was looking great for the final.
In the final she split her best 50, 100 and 150 and was coming 2nd with 5 meters to swim. She tightened up from over trying with the 2 American and Canadian swimmers, who were chasing her down the last stretch, pipping her at the post . Sophia came 5th.
It was such an exciting race with the Aussies cheering her on also as they were keen to beat the Americans! She made many mistakes and although she seems to be great under water by Christchurch standards, she is still very much the weakest in the field here on the international stage.
Sophia was gracious in defeat. She got right up and cheered for team mate, Gareth Kean, who sealed the gold along with the open NZ record.
Day 4 was the fun day with the 200 IM and 50 FR in which Sophia made both B finals. Sam Lee and Sam Lucy-Smith, NZ swimmers, also made the 50 Fr B final so the girls decided to call it the KIWI final, drawing inspiration from each other. Both finals were faster than heat swims although not PB's."
Sophia and Leanne have learnt so so much from this meet and made many friends from all countries. Leanne says to the AquaGym Swimmers: "Stay tuned for some insight into those lessons when we return.... to help you all become Aquagym legends at South Island Champs."
Junior Pan Pac Championship Meet Day Two
Monday, 30 August 2010 07:36
AquaGym Swim Club Head Coach, Leanne Speechley reports from day 2 at the Junior Pan Pacs Meet in Maui, Hawaii - "Well a much better day today from Sophia! With a rocky start going 1 second over her PB in the 100 freestyle event in the morning , she managed to turn it around in the B final to go an exact equal PB of 57.25 which is the NZ women's 15 years age group record. We really worked hard on the warm up prep tonight and on lifting the attitude and lightened things up! Spatch is back!"
The atmosphere at the pool lifted another notch on day 2 with songs being dedicated to teams and more exciting team chants from USA and Australia.
Our small New Zealand has alot to contend with compared to the other swim teams from other nations. Those nations all have video analysis on every race, a team doctor, physio, masseuse, sport scientist, media guy, 11 coaches and 3 managers. The NZ team has only coaches!
So our NZ swimmers are buildinfg resilience by toughing out ,competing against the best and making it work with what they have!
AquaGym Swim Coub congratulates Sophia on her performance at this meet and her new NZ Age Group Record!.
